Thurston’s Lobster Pound

Look for the yellow tents on Bass Harbor

The (excellent) views from a picnic table at Bagaduce Lunch

On the southernmost tip of Mount Desert Island, you’ll find a little town called Bernard, home to Thurston’s Lobster Pound. Its location, in a sleepy fishing village on Bass Harbor, gives you spectacular water views from either of its yellow-tented dining rooms. You’re going to want to come hungry, bring a camera, and leave room for dessert.

What To Eat

While you’re watching the Swan Island Ferry come and go from across harbor, grab a local craft beer or glass of wine from the upstairs bar. Before you settle down with one of Coastal Living’s best lobster rolls in Maine, be sure to grab some chowder to start your meal. With plenty of options to choose from (crab and corn, haddock, scallop, or the always worthy special of the day), you’ll know you’re in good hands to kick-off your meal with a cup their specialty.

From there, order-up their hot lobster or crab dips, or dive into a bowl of steamed mussels or clams to share at the table. When you’re ready for the real deal, Thurston’s lobsters come in three sizes and two shells - chicks, halves, and selects, all served hard or soft. The locals (owners included) recommend the soft shell lobsters for their sweeter, more tender meat. Given that the family has been in the business for five generations, we’re inclined to take their suggestion and grab a bib.

Where To Go

While you’re on this part of the island, don’t miss out on a visit to the often photographed, absolutely stunning, Bass Harbor Light nearby. It’s known for its knockout sunsets and is often featured as the star of many a work of art. And if you’re looking for a place to lay your head, be sure to pitch a tent at NECS favorite Seawall Campground. To hear more about Thurston’s story, their lobster, and everything else that makes this shack special, head to their website or take a drive up to Acadia National Park to see the operation for yourself this summer or fall.
