The Clam Shack
Trust in the lines
When the phrase, “location, location, location,” was first uttered, we imagine it was off the lips of a coastal real estate agent leasing the building that now houses the Clam Shack in Kennebunkport’s Dock Square. Opened in in 1968, this counter-service mainstay has managed to weather years of northern New England winters above the Kennebunk River to open for lines of patrons craving fresh and fried seafood every summer and fall.
What To Eat
The Clam Shack’s lobster roll is so iconic it has been dissected by popular food publications, it’s also made more Best of Maine lists and travel guides than you can count on two hands. While the lobster is important, its secret ingredient might be the less-is-more mayo smeared across a fresh bun from Reilly’s Bakery in Biddeford. Selling as many as 500 lobster rolls per day during peak season, it’s a must-try for anyone looking for a taste of Maine. Even if it’s just to say you did it.
Where To Go
While you may see the size of the lobster roll and think it’s all you can manage, don’t sleep on the picturesque clam box or fried haddock sandwich. You won’t find much seating nearby unless you get luck yon the back deck, so plan to take it with you to a local beach or any of the gorgeous views in town. To learn more about the man behind the clams, this piece from his alma-mater (Bates) is a great read.
