McLoon’s Lobster Shack

Maine’s littlest shack with the biggest views

The shack at McLoons

It’s been called the Rolls Royce of lobster rolls, one of the best restaurants in New England, and they’ve pioneered the now-popular lobster roll delivery. We’re talking about McLoons Lobster Shack, the widely loved, often acclaimed, lobster shack located in South Thomaston, Maine at the tip of Spruce Head Island.

The McLoons menu is small, but mighty — not unlike its shack, serving-up seafood across the way from the oldest working lobster wharf in Maine. The views, however, are absolutely gigantic. In front of you sit more than 30 islands, serving as the protectorate to the harbor from the Atlantic.

What To Eat

Here, you already know the lobsters are fresh and delicious, but oysters should be on the menu to start any meal. Always local, always fresh, always shucked right there while you wait for the rest of your order, the salty taste of each oyster is the perfect companion to your new-found surroundings. After you down a dozen, you’ve officially earned your lobster roll. Decide if you want yours served with your choice of mayo, butter (or both), then dig in. We opt for butter almost always, but the other options won’t disappoint the mayo purists of the world (you know who you are). Nothing but Cape Cod Potato Chips, coleslaw, and pickle will do when it comes to sides, unless you’re looking for some chowder or soup to wash it all down. Save room for something sweet, as they rotate pies and other desserts daily.

Where To Go

McLoons Lobster Shack is a quick twenty minutes south of Rockland, with its famous Breakwater Lighthouse, foodie scene, and plenty of lodging options. Take the ferry from Rockland to Vinalhaven and get lost for a day (or week) and report back, it’s trip that’s been on our wishlist for far too long. Another area to explore, just over 10 miles north of the shack is Owl’s Head State Park with its beautiful rocky beach and areas of discovery. There’s so much to do in this small stretch of Maine’s MidCoast, don’t miss out by just passing through.
