Ford’s Lobster

The start of CT’s best seafood crawl

Ford’s Lobster, located in Groton, Connecticut’s fishing village of Noank, has a few things going for it. The first is 180 degree views looking out onto Mason’s Island and neighboring Mystic. The second is history, with its tradition of locally sourced, fresh ingredients since the 1950s, Ford’s has been a Noank institution all its life. The last is creativity, as this lobster shack serves-up all the expected seaside dishes with its own little twist.

What To Order

Order the Lobster Bomb. Period. At $40, it’s not a meal for a light wallet, but for those willing to hand over their cash, the end result is truly worth every penny. Ford’s Lobster Bomb consists of a full 1/2 lbs. of fresh picked lobster, served hot with butter in a perfectly crisped bread bowl. Feeling extra fancy? Make it a Bisque Bomb for an extra $3 and top your heap of lobster with creamy lobster bisque -- a genius combination of two fan favorites in one savory dish. We can probably stop right there, but we’d be selling you short if we didn’t mention the Lobster Avocado Grilled Cheese (bacon, tomato, and American cheese, served between two slabs of Texas toast), Blackened Fish Tacos (fresh cod, salmon or scallops; blackened and topped with house made mango avocado slaw), or their traditional (and excellent) Lobster Roll, with 1/4 lbs. of fresh lobster, served hot with butter or cold with mayo and celery.

If you’re hoping to sit down on the Ford’s patio for dinner or a longer afternoon meal, try some of fine-dining-worthy favorites like Lobster Risotto, Lobster Mac & Cheese, Blackened or Fried Scallops, or traditional Fish & Chips. We didn’t get to them all, but as the plates flew by us, we wished for a second stomach to stay longer.

Where to Go

If a seafood crawl is what you’re after, Ford’s is located in the best spot possible, with Abbott’s Lobster in the Rough and Costello’s Clam Shack just around the corner. For sandy feet, Esker Point Beach and Long Point Beach are both nearby and Bluff Point State Park is full of waterfront trails and views for anyone looking to get outdoors. With Mystic a short drive away, Noank’s location is truly a perfect stop for a day trip or overnight.
