Five Islands Lobster Co.
Cross the Sagadahoc Bridge and don’t look back
We certainly haven’t been to every peninsula off Maine’s scenic Route 1, but of the ten we have explored, Georgetown remains one of our favorites. Forty-five minutes north of Portland, Five Islands Lobster Co. sits on the eastern side of the island on the active wharf of Five Islands Harbor. This fishing village in Georgetown, Maine boasts views at every angle, as the dock sits above the waters of Sheepscot Bay just before they open up into the Gulf. Wait for your number to be called, settle in at the perfect picnic table, and take in the sights and smells of the five islands.
What To Eat
We’ll get right down to it. The lobster roll, with its touch of mayo and perfectly buttered and grilled bun, is excellent. Down East magazine has called their fried clam basket the best of Maine, no doubt helped by their perfect coloring and homemade tartar sauce with cilantro mayo. The onion rings were legendary. They claim their crab cake sandwich is, “somewhat famous,” and while we didn’t have it ourselves, we’ve heard it’s a total knockout. On top of all that, their lobsters and steamers are supplied on the very dock you’re enjoying your meal on, which means it’s just about as fresh as you can get anywhere.
Where To Go
Nearby, explore Reid State Park, the Berry Woods Preserve, or the Josephine Newman Audubon Sanctuary, all located on Georgetown Island. Trip Savvy has an excellent guide to the islands and we recommend exploring their site further for tips on where to stay, shop, and get to know the area.
We love this spot and expect it’ll be at the top of our recommendation for a long time coming.
